Obituary of Robert Emmet Young

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Robert E. Young, age 92, went home to the Lord on August 12 to be with his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of 59 years, Ginny. Bob was born in Wildwood Crest, NJ in 1924 to the late Charles and Emma Young and lived there his entire life. During his early years, he delivered ice around the island and lifeguarded on the Wildwood beach. After high school, he served his country in the US Army during World War II. Following the war, Bob found a job with Western Electric, where he worked for 39 years. During those years, he raised a family, enjoyed fishing and golfing, and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Once retired, Bob served as a volunteer for the Wildwood Crest Ambulance Corps and as Commissioner of Wildwood Crest, where he was instrumental in redeveloping the Wildwood Crest Pier and the Wildwood Crest Fire House, and worked to keep the beaches free. During his tenure as Commissioner and for many years later, Bob fought to enforce the zoning laws of the Crest and did all he could to prevent the over-development of his treasured town. Bob’s devotion to his Catholic faith was inspiring. He was a regular at the rosary recitation and daily Mass at Assumption Church. And, because of his long-time support for Catholic education and, in particular, Wildwood Catholic High School, Bob was named Honorary Chairman of the Save Wildwood Catholic organization, which not only saved the school, but strengthened it. Despite Bob’s many accomplishments, he was most proud of his 11 children, 24 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by each of them. Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife, Virginia “Ginny”, brothers Charles and Elwood, daughter Monique “Mimi” Mazari, son James “OB” and great granddaughter Emily Hogue. He is survived by Robert “Tony” and Ann Young, Richard Young, Stephanie and James Hogue, Barbara and John Goshen, Jamie Young, Chuck Young, Pat and Cheryl Young, Bernadette “Cricket” and Bill Turbett, Colleen and Jim O’Hara and John and Kelli Young. Bob is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 from 10:00 until 11:30am at the Assumption Church, 7100 Seaview Avenue, Wildwood Crest. Mass of Christian burial will follow at noon. Interment will be at Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Cape May. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lazarus House c/o Notre Dame de la Mer Parish Offices, 1501 Central Avenue, Suite 100, North Wildwood, New Jersey 08260 or Wildwood Catholic High School, 1500 Central Ave, North Wildwood, New Jersey 08260.
