EHLERS, G. LOY,- Former Chief School Administrator of Cape May County Special Services School District, aged 79 years, died peacefully in his Cape May home surrounded by loved ones on January 16th, 2018 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Ehlers was born in Erwin, TN, graduated from Cape May HS where he starred in varsity basketball & football, a Coast Guard veteran & member of the USCG Bears football team. He attended Eastern College where he was a 4-year starter on the basketball team & Glassboro (Rowan) University where he received his BA & M.Ed. degrees.

He was a lifelong coach, educator, business owner, community leader & a nationally recognized innovator in special education.  He began his career as a teacher at LCMR High School where he served as football, basketball & cross country coach.  He also coached various community sports teams including little & senior league baseball, & recreational league youth basketball.

Ehlers’ passionate belief in the concept of a dedicated school district for disabled youth led to a long & illustrious career in which he served as Asst. Principal, Asst. Superintendent and ultimately Superintendent of the Special Services School District & was a member/officer of 12 county, state & federal educational organizations. During his tenure he instituted more than twenty major projects & programs including planning & managing the construction of a new media center & middle school. Ehlers & his wife also successfully owned & operated the Hi-Lilli motel in Wildwood Crest for over 30 years until their retirement.

Ehlers’s enjoyed “simply messing around in boats”, fishing & spending time with his friends, traveling the world & spending time in FL, camping, reading & especially spending time talking with and doting on his grandchildren. Ehlers’ dearest love was Helen (nee Hansen), his high school sweetheart & wife of 57 years. The couple met at a high school football game between Wildwood & Cape May when they were just 16 years old & spent a lifetime of love dedicated to one another. The couples’ union led to a son, Gosch Loy Ehlers III married to Melissa (nee Carlot) & four beautiful grandchildren, Gosch Loy IV, Sigrid, Elsa & Anatoly.  Gosch Loy IV & wife Lindsay (nee Redfearn) recently blessed the family with Piper, their first great granddaughter & the joy of Ehlers’ last months with us. Ehlers is preceded in death by his father Gosch, mother Jacqueline & brother Don.  He is additionally survived by his brothers Leroy of Simpsonville, SC, Gene of Petaluma, CA, sister Georgia Dean McCullough of Gray, TN, cousin Sandy Dunn of Wildwood & many nieces & nephews.
