Brian was lead manager of my Prudential agency in Houston - my first job out of college. I appreciated that he had been scammed by Prudential just like I was to start this "special corporate training agency" which, instead, fell into the hands of a sales department under George Exner instead of in the hands of Training and development department under Judy Janke. Brian was very rote. He never led us into a rebuke of Prudential, which had misled us all. We didn't get trained to run the company. We were forced to knock door to door and to sell life insurance too poor people in order to pay our pathetic salaries. Brian never fought this injustice. Brian taught us how to "cheat" our cancellation and lapse ratio, etc. and taught us how to parade these highly doctored ratios when company corporate came visiting. It was the only way at that company. He told us tales of his Prudential PennyPack district in Philadelphia, where his manager would lie down on a client's couch and refuse to leave until he sold a policy.

Brian and I grew up together. He was born one day before I was and our mothers shared the same hospital. We lived on the same block. I was a big infant, he was not. I became the shortest kid in my class. Brian towered over me. He was a good boyhood friend and the life of the gang. He was funny and ambitious. He would sell eggs door to door on the block. My father bought them (Brian was maybe 11?), and then laughed. "That Lafferty kid is gonna do fine," my Dad said. He did do fine. I'm sorry we lost touch. Would have much enjoyed his company. RIP old friend.
