I am extremely saddened by the passing of this wonderful man. He was my teacher, my track coach, recreation director and someone you could always depend on. I loved the way he would challenge you to do your best and when you thought you were he would make you step it up even higher. So many memories that he will never be forgotten. I think of the time i was going to head over to baseball tryouts for the high school team and passed thru Maxwell field, saw the javelin and threw it. He saw me asked me where I was going, told him baseball tryouts and he assured me that in no other circumstances that I was on the track team and there was to be no discussion from that point on. I argued that I was playing baseball then he assured me that I would not be passing his history class. Safe to say he won. One day he was arguing with the class that communism was getting a bad rap and some of the kids were starting to agree with him. Once he saw that he told us that he had just brain washed us and began to holler about how easy were were to brain wash and that we were stupid to even suggest that communism was a good thing. From that point on we knew the best way to discuss topics in his class was to argue all points. He loved to argue and the better the argument the better the discussion. That was over 53 years ago and I can remember like it was yesterday. That’s the impact he had on me. They don’t make men, teachers and coaches like that anymore. Rest In Peace chev. You earned it. This is just another thread missing in our community blanket and god is that blanket tread bare.

Sending many sympathetic thoughts to Mr. Shevlin’s family. That I remember him so well is an indication of his positive effect on this one student. I am indebted to his dedication and intellectual stimulation from long ago. E. Susanna Eisenhower-Turner MD

I knew Jim from the early 1950s when he was dating my cousin Marcia Juliana. He was always a good and friendly person and we had long talks about a lot of things, including his family history and architectural work in Collingswood, to which he drove every workday from North Wildwood. I did not know he had died until a couple weeks after the funeral. Regret not being there.

For 30 years Jim watched over OSK like a doting father. First he was John Olivieri's advisor and confidant, as well as his father-in-law. When we lost John, Jim redoubled his efforts to give us his sage advice, counsel, and stories. Lots and lots of stories. It seems like Jim did a bit of everything in his lifetime! He unfailingly drove from Wildwood to Collingswood in rain sleet or snow. With his guidance we made it through the Great Recession and came out the other end stronger than ever. We have missed him greatly since his retirement and miss him even more now that he has moved on. We wish the entire Shevlin Clan our deepest condolences. We will miss you Jim, God Bless You! From Paul, Dan, Rosanne, and the entire OSK team.

Our hearts are broken as we lose another member of the Shevlin Clan. Have so many great memories of Uncle Jim; especially during annual family reunion times. His reading of the family poem was always my favorite part. Cannot believe we won't hear him say "for they gave us a gift far few can get; for ye cannot buy the Shevlin wit." (from John Peter and Elizabeth's life). Many condolences to his immediate family of girls, grandkids, great grandkids and to all of us as well. Terry Einhaus

There are too many memories of Uncle Jim to list. But maybe the best was that he let me walk home with him a few months ago. We just chatted along the way and it probably took longer than it needed to. But it sure triggered a lot of those other memories for me. It was a gift that I will always treasure. Enjoy that family reunion that you’re “MCing” now. Try to keep your brothers and sisters on key during that song.
