My friend Andy would have been 78 today. He was my friend and next door neighbor for more than 30 years. I. Treasured his loyalty, admired his intellect and passion for education and his interest in politics. We didn’t always agree. As a matter of fact our arguments Sometimes got so heated one of us would storm off. But we remained good friends. Andy was one of the best friends I ever had. Rest In Peace my friend.

I met Andy 31 years ago today, July 2, 1989, when the Corrados moved in next door to the Melchiorres on Romney Place. We became friends immediately, and for the next three decades not a day passed that we didn't talk to each other. Andy was "Wildwood" to the core, and exemplified all that is best about that one-of-a-kind town. I never had a kinder, more generous, or more loyal friend. I will miss you, Andy. Rest in peace.

So very sorry to hear of the loss of our cousin Andy. Although it has been years since we last saw one another, your McLeod family in California, Washington, and Indiana (sons and daughter of Jim and Diane McLeod) are thinking of our Melchiorre family.

In 1989, my family moved next door to the Melchiorre's. I was a 12 or 13, so for most of my life, Andy has been in it. He and my father became friends immediately. They attended sporting events together or sat on the porch and talked about everything, sometimes in Latin. If ever I needed help, or my family needed anything, Andy was always there for us. He was loyal, loving, dependable and kind. Thinking upon it now, what exceptional luck, that we moved into the house next to his.
When I was graduating high school, I was chosen to give a speech and my father suggested I ask Andy for help in writing it and, of course, he helped. The speech was about the strength of a public school education because of the power of diversity and it ended with me reciting Maya Angelou's Human Family. In the end, I wasn't allowed to give the speech because it was deemed too controversial, but that memory of Andy helping me organize my thoughts and choose just the right words is one of my fondest. I have always been proud of writing that speech; and the sentiments in it encapsulated some of Andy's greatest beliefs: that everyone deserves to be educated and heard and that the world is better because we are all unique. That everyone has value and that when everyone is able to contribute, our lives are fuller. Thank you, Mr. Melchiorre, for being in my life.

Andy was the only board member I can remember who would come into our elementary school just to see what was going on. This was many years after his own children had grown up - he was not there to check on his own kids. He would walk quietly into my music class and sit at the back. His eyes would light up and he would smile broadly to watch the children sing or dance or play instruments. It was obvious that he cared about children. I always loved his visits and his great smile! - Lynn Smith-Eldon

So very sad to hear of Andy’s passing. The Melchiorre family has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember since I grew up on Second Avenue and consider Andy’s brother Tom and Andy’s cousin, Toni as two of my dearest friends. My condolences and prayers to the family.
