Obituary of Veronica B. Furey
Mrs. Veronica Bonner Furey died peacefully at her Bradenton, Florida home on August 27, 2023, at the age of 95. She was the widow of Dr. Robert Furey, the mother of 7, grandmother of 25, and great-grandmother of 26 (& counting). She lived in Wildwood Crest, NJ for most of her life.
Born July 13, 1928 to John F. Bonner and Veronica Jones Bonner, in Philadelphia. After her father died when she was six, her beloved mother and she moved to NJ with her Aunt Nellie and Uncle Mike. They then returned to the Philadelphia area where she attended St. Gregory’s Elementary School, then St. Leonard’s High School, graduating in 1946. Veronica, or “Bunny” as she was known to many of her friends, graduated Immaculata College with a Bachelor of Arts in English and French. She then attained a Master’s in Education at Temple University. Our Mom taught 3rd grade, tutored French, spent time in Quebec, and briefly wrote for the fashion section of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
In 1954 she married young Doctor Bob Furey, who joined his uncle’s medical practice in Wildwood, NJ. They made their home in Wildwood Crest, set up an office on the first floor of their home, and began their family. Mom ran most of the business aspects of Dad’s practice. As they were blessed with more children, the office was moved next door. She was involved with each of her children’s many activities, and was particularly interested in their education, inspiring each of her children, and later her grandchildren, to maximize individual gifts and potential.
Our Mom was involved in the community and at our schools. As a faithful daughter of the Catholic Church, she was very active at Assumption Church in Wildwood Crest - serving as a religious education teacher, lector, manager of the Church religious gift store, cantor, and Eucharistic Minister, including bringing Our Lord to the homebound. In Florida, she was a parishioner of Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles Church.
In her later years, even as dementia progressively imposed on her sharp mind and dulled her brilliant memory, she remained a gracious, compassionate, and elegant lady.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, Dr. Robert Furey, her parents, and her granddaughter, Katherine Palo. She is survived by her children: Drs. Karen & Hugh Liebert, Dr. Rob & Jane Furey, Susan Furey, Maureen Mulholland, Dr. Bill & Donna Furey, Richard & Danielle Furey, and Dyan Furey.
Her grandchildren: Hugh Liebert, Rob Liebert, Matt Liebert, Maria Meeks, Shawn Furey, Colleen Furey, Annie Simon, Kelly Gittinger, Danny Furey, John Lloyd, Greg Lloyd, Zachary Lloyd, Gary Palo, Lauren Pollock, Alyssa Palo, Leah Zikoski, Jay Furey, Sarah Furey, Brynn Furey, Kaelen Furey, Graham Furey, Taryn Furey, Julia Furey-Bastian, and Bonner Furey-Bastian.
Her great-grandchildren: Cameron, Ava, Annabel, Reagan, Maggie, Hughie, Carter, Will, Ella, Lucy, Gary, Connor, Nicholas, Grant, Jack, Daniel, Caden, Beau, Wyatt, MJ, Avery, Maverick, Kate, Joseph, Mia, and baby girl due 12/2023. She is also survived by her dear cousin Father Charles Bonner, several nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 8th at Assumption Catholic Church, 7100 Seaview Ave., Wildwood Crest, NJ. Visitation will be at 10 AM at the Church, with Mass at 11 AM. Burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, 1056 Seashore Road, Cape May, NJ.
