I was 15 when I started on the beach. Tony invited me to my first guard party and introduce me to flamer shots. He frequently came to my stand for assistance with unruly beach goers. I have many fond memories of guarding. Tony, Tom Palmer, Al Smith, Zoom were all a big part of those fond memories.
One year I asked if I could bring my weights to workout in the tent, granted. Same night after the Beschens he bought me drinks, I was puzzled as to why he was buying me so many. He looked me in the eye, said you rowed a great race…and by the way we set those flags with your weights! And we both laughed hysterically. Needless to say a few days later he replaced that set of weights.
Tony was hard on guys who didn’t play by the rules but went out of his way to help those who were there for the job. RIP Tony.

Sending Love....Thoughts and Prayers to Joanie and Family. I worked with Tony on the NWBP from 1970 to 1977. He was an awesome soul with a great sense of humor....great laugh....and a great leader. The city of North Wildwood was very fortunate to have him at the helm of the Beach Patrol. He is a Legend and will be very missed. Rest in Peace Tony and God Bless....

I knew Tony but only through Lifeguard circles and lifeguards under him. Several years ago, my friend and former Captain Buzz Mogck invited me to the dinner club. Chief Tony, Buzz, Buddy Johnson and myself would get together every other Thursday night for dinner. It was then I got to know Tony and to call him a close friend.
I will miss our dinners, his laugh and reminiscing of summer years gone bye.
The months passed quickly and then he was gone!
We lost a great guy in Tony Cavalier and for me, will be sorely missed. The slogan, "Lifeguards for Life" fit him like a glove.
Rest in Peace my friend.

Joan, my heart breaks for your loss! Tony has been my longest & dearest friend since 2nd grade through Goldey Beacom! We shared a special bond of friendship throughout these 71 years. We laughed a lot and shed some tears at Cooper Hospital. He fought the good fight and is now free of anguish! You were blest to share 45 precious years together. My wish is comfort to you Joan and a prayer for Tony, “rest well my lovely, dearest friend! Sharon

Many great memories of the summers, fellow lifeguards and good friends on the NWBP during the late ‘60s through the late 70s. Tony was not only one of them but also a continuing link for the “old-timers” during his long, fine and distinguished NWBP career.
RIP to a good man.

Lifeguarding in the Wildwoods for many years you get to know the who's who in the lifeguarding circle. Tony was certainly one of those in that special category. Although I worked on the WCBP I always had respect for Tony and his leadership of the NWBP. He always had admiration for the other patrols especially in competition and always gave his compliments when due. We are all "Lifeguards for Life" and Tony certainly was one of them.

Dear Joan, I was so sad to learn of Tony's death. We went through 12 years of school together. One of my fondest memories was sitting by him in eighth grade. That poor nun. There was a group of about eight rambunctious boys who kept the rest of the class entertained. They all matured to be wonderful adult men who contributed so much to their community. His passing leaves a huge hole in the heart of so many. You both will be in my thoughts and prayers. Fondly Pat Nagel

Joanie and family,
There are no words that I can say which can adequately express how sorry I am for the loss of Tony. We were both kids when we joined NWBP and grew up working "the best job we ever had." His legacy of protecting our beaches and the training of our lifeguards will carry on for generations. May he rest in peace.

A genuine guy who cared for all of his lifeguards and taught them many life lessons. He was the driving force to honor Mike and Jimmy in the Beschen Callahan races. He touched our families with his kindness and thoughtfulness while honoring the ultimate sacrifice of these young men. We are forever grateful. May he in rest in peace as he is welcomed by all who those loved him and have gone before him.
Peace from the Callahan whipkey families.

Joe Kelly the first memory I have Tony was, I was taking the lifeguard swimming test and remember this guy in the boat watching everyone and he had a jacket on. That was in 1969. Two years later Tony used to sit the stand next to me and I go down to give a break when he sat alone. And also to tell him to stop calling people in my water that they were out to far. I move to Colorado but I still came back to lifeguard and one time Tony came out with me for a couple weeks. In over the years every time I was on the east coast I came back to say hi. I’m really going to miss him. Tony you were one of the good ones.

I am so sorry to hear about Tony's passing. As the wife of the late Dr. Allen E. Smith I came to learn a lot about lifeguards, Tony, the beach, and the 'stories' thereof.
Allen always made it a point to visit Tony when we were in New Jersey. It was a time when these 'stories' were validated. On our last visit there Tony actually allowed for Allen and Tom P. to take out a lifeguard boat for a little row...a good laugh was had by Tony and all of us watching as they capsized the boat.
Tony and friends arranged for Allen's Memorial on the beach to celebrate him with fellow lifeguards and many years of friendship with Tony. I was deeply moved when I saw that Tony had named one of the lifeguard boats after my husband Lt. Al Smith. Tony was an extremely thoughtful person - one of a kind!

I was invited to join Tony and Al Smith to share the apartment above the J J Hone appliance store at 26th and New York during the summer of 1973. That and subsequence summers truly changed my life. Tony and Al quickly became best friends and remained best friends until their passing. The good times we had have never been equaled. He will be missed and remembered by all who knew him and worked with him. My sincere condolences go to all his friends and family.
