It is with great sadness that I have just learned of the departure of my dear friend.
I think back to the 1970's through the 90's and on.. Horace and Charlie Glenn (the owner of a bait and tackle shop) and I -- the three of us together -- fished in the surf along the coast in the fall when the tourists left after Labor Day. Horace and I would wander in his old Volkswagen camper on the beaches from Wildwood to Stone Harbor and north, looking for sea birds diving into the surf, a sure sign that bluefish or stripers were there. When we spotted them we descended on the beach and pulled in so many fish we would lose count. These were beautiful times, with the waves pounding and the skies gray and the first of the winter storms hitting the New Jersey coast.
Many other memories of those wonderful times rise in my mind. Most of all were our dinners together, just the two of us, at Horace's house in North Wildwood, at the end of the season as the winter came on. We had an annual dinner and we called it our Last Hurrah in New Jersey. I brought the wine, the best of the best, and Horace provided the steaks and the last of the tomatoes from his small garden. It was always a magnificent dinner and all the more because we spent the evening talking of poetry and philosophy and history.
I miss him so. God bless Horace.
"And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."

On behalf of Horace's friends at the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse, I want to express our sadness and condolences to his family. There were few people I enjoyed the company of as much as Horace. His upbeat personality, always inquisitive mind and great enthusiasm for life, is a good lesson for everyone. We will miss him much.

I knew Horace as a fellow train collector, beach walker, lover of the Hereford inlet lighthouse. We spent many a moment talking about these things. You will be missed by many.

The most interesting man I ever met. Spent countless hours listening to stories about his family, movies, trains, flying and accomplishments he was so proud of. Mr. & Mrs. Wied were from a generation that we will never experience again, kind, thoughtful and honest. We will miss them dearly. Happiness is that they are together again.
