Obituary of Anthony R D'Alessio

Please share a memory of Anthony to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Anthony Richard D’Alessio was born January 18, 1925 in a small house in South

Philadelphia. His immigrant parents were Bombino Mascia and Constantino

D’Alessio. “D” had five sisters: Rose, Elizabeth, Laura, Mary and Sue who adored him

and always said, “There is nothing good enough for our Anthony” who returned their

love triple fold. He met his wife Helene Valenti in Wildwood, NJ where he was a

lifeguard for many years. They were married on December 23, 1950. The first time

he saw Helene in her white bathing suit he said, “I’m going to marry that girl.” And so

the story began for 67 years. They had four children: Jeffrey, Gary, Laurie and Lynn.

They have been blessed with nine wonderful grand children: Lauren, Jonathan,

Ashlynn, Kiley, Morgan, Will, Allexa, Casey and Antonio and four great grandchildren:

Stella, Miles, Helene and Margaret.

He taught in many schools under the Philadelphia Board of Education. In the

evenings he worked for the Philadelphia Department of Recreation. His last job was

in the Naval Depot before retiring. He owned and operated Lakeview Docks, also

known as “D’s Docks” with his wife Helene and his children, where he also gave talks

as “Mr. Blue Claw.” He went to Tulane University on a football scholarship, but

returned to Philadelphia to finish his undergraduate degree at Villanova. He later

received his Masters in Education from Temple University. Anthony joined the US

Navy when he was 19 years old and was a gunner’s mate for two years, where he

received numerous medals.

His finest attribute was people – he never met a person he didn’t like. He led the

Explorers Troop 421 in Blackwood, NJ. He was an assistant football coach at SCPH

and Bok Vocational School in South Philadelphia. He was known as “Mr. D” by many

of his students that loved him. He also received the Teacher of the Year award.

One of his many attributes he gave us was his love and caring for everyone, not

himself. He always put himself second. There never lived a kinder or more gentle

man.

Anthony Richard D’Alessio passed away peacefully on June 13th, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.
