Mitchell, William L. ( Bill ), 70, of Rio Grande formerly of Wildwood, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, December 31, 2015, after a long battle with lung cancer. Born to Thomas and Elizabeth Mitchell nee Breslin at the old Margaret Mace Hospital in 1945, Bill was raised in Wildwood and graduated from Wildwood High School in1964. That same year, Bill joined the Marine Corps, where he earned a Purple Heart for his duty to his country in the Vietnam War. Shorty after his discharge from the Marine Corps, Bill joined the Wildwood Police Department. During his 25 year career he served as a K-9 officer, a traffic enforcement officer, a motorcycle officer and rose to the rank of Sargent before retiring in 1994. He further served the Wildwood Community as a 25 year member of the Wildwood School District Board of Education, serving several years as president and later serving 4 years as a Wildwood City Commissioner. He was an exempt member of the Holly Beach Fire Department. A strong supporter of our military, he belonged to the Disabled American Veterans, Vietnam Veterans of America, North Wildwood VFW Post 5941, Wildwood American Legion post 184, and the Wildwood VFW Post 3509, serving as the Commander for several years for both the Wildwood American Legion and VFW Posts. He was also a member of the Elks and Moose. Later in life he became an active Credo Member where he witnessed for Christ. He was also an active member of the Grace Gospel Chapel where he served as a trustee. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Margaret ( Peggy) nee Whalen, 3 daughters, Vicky ( Nathan) Baker, Dawn Mitchell, and Colleen ( John) Walsh, 4 brothers, Thomas ( Sally), Mike ( Kathy), Richard ( Linda) andStanley ( Jeanne), and his beloved 4 legged companions Commish and Murphy. He is also survived by 2 uncles, Frank ( Nancy) Breslin and George Young and countless cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday January 6, 2016. A viewing will be held at Grace Gospel Chapel, 3802 Route 9 South, Rio Grande, NJ from 11:30am to 1:00pm followed by a memorial service. Interment will follow at the Veterans Cemetery at Crest Haven.
